Job Summary

A Ceramic Studio Technician supports the daily operation of a ceramics studio by maintaining equipment, preparing clay and glazes, organizing tools and materials, and ensuring a clean, safe workspace. They assist with loading and unloading kilns, monitor firing schedules, perform basic equipment maintenance, manage inventory, and provide technical support to students, artists, or instructors as needed. The role requires attention to detail, knowledge of ceramic processes, and a commitment to studio safety and organization at the beautiful working environment of the Muckenthaler Cultural Center. The ideal candidate will also possess a skill set working with all ages, is proficient in different mediums and can offer a wide variety of art classes. Although the operations of the ceramic studio will be the primary duty, this position does offer additional hours through other teaching opportunities. 

The Muckenthaler is located on 8.5 acres of perfectly landscaped parklands on a hill overlooking Fullerton. We are a historic mansion and home to an on-site gallery, 250 seat amphitheater, a ceramics studio and 3 art studios. 

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Prepare, mix, and recycle clay and glaze materials. 
• Patron, student and client services. 
• Load, fire, unload, and monitor electric and/or gas kilns according to the program timeline. ● Maintain and troubleshoot studio equipment, including kilns, wheels, slab rollers, extruders, and ventilation systems. 
• Ensure the studio is clean, organized, and compliant with health and safety standards. ● Monitor inventory of clay, glazes, tools, chemicals, and studio supplies.. 
• Assist instructors, students, and artists with studio procedures and technical questions. ● Perform routine maintenance on equipment and coordinate repairs. 
• Maintain accurate firing logs, material records, and equipment maintenance schedules. ● Enforce studio safety policies and proper use of tools, materials, and equipment. ● Support workshops, classes, exhibitions, and special studio events as needed. 

Qualifications

• Experience working in a ceramics studio or similar arts environment in various age/skill levels. 
• Knowledge of ceramic materials, glaze chemistry, and gas/electric kiln operation.. ● Ability to safely handle ceramic chemicals and equipment. 
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. 
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. 
• Ability to work with a team 

Ceramic Studio Technician 07/2026

• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods. 
• Basic computer skills for inventory tracking and record keeping and kiln firing log. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Ceramics, Studio Art, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. 
• Experience with electric, gas, and/or wood-fired kilns. 
• Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and ceramics studio best practices. ● Experience firing different atmospheres and techniques. 

This position requires working in a ceramics studio environment with exposure to clay dust, glazes, kiln heat, and studio equipment. The technician must follow all safety procedures, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintain a safe working environment for all studio users. 

Stipend

$25- $50 per hour, DOE
