El Sol y La Luna

By: Workshop for Community Arts Artists: Isidro “Chilo” Pérez and Adriana Sánchez Alexander, 2019

El Sol y La Luna was created by Workshop for Community Arts and artists Isidro “Chilo” Pérez and Adriana Sánchez Alexander for El Sol Science and Arts Academy in 2019.

This mural was created in a community process where students, parents, and staff were asked about what excited them about their school, what it looked like to care for one another, and what kinds of images they would enjoy seeing everyday to inspire them at school. Students from the CASAS program helped administer, analyze, and report back on the survey process. After listening to the survey results, the artists then presented the students with different design options, and the CASAS students voted on their favorite images to be included in the mural. The chosen mural design was projected and traced on the wall with the help of the SAC Mural Team. The painting was then started during a community painting day and festival. Then, over several weeks, students and neighbors were invited to come help paint and, in this way, this mural was made by many hands.
